This was the status that a friend of mine had put up on his FB wall. It was put on lighter note, but it has a heavier meaning. It is undeniably true in context of the country, that you must have figured out without much difficulty. This country is plagued by three C's Corruption, Castism, and Communalism, that hinders its development. I am discussing only the first C.
With all respects to the person who stirred the whole nation against corruption, Shri Anna Hazare, had a lot of hypocrates supporting it. No doubt the politicians are at fault in countless ways and they are accountable to the nation, no matter who is in power. I would have expected the same chaos if any other coalition was in power, so I would refrain from naming any politicians.
The political scenario here in this country is dynastic and capitalistic. He who has the name or the money can win the elections here. Ask anyone who is interested in voting (50% of electorate doesn't vote) what is the metrics that s/he uses to judge the candidates. The answer would be shameful enough. Just before the elections the roads are repaired (which wont last for more than 3 months after election), temples' and churches' coffers get filled, an underqualified person gets a government job. It looks as if that for every elections they repair the same road, the same electrical connections, same water connections.
Not exercising your franchise is in itself a crime, and does not qualify you to shout slogans at Anna's rally. There would be many in the rally that when pulled up by a traffic cop for traffic violations, will pull a 100 rupee note instead of their licence, or say that a senior inspector is your uncle. There would be still many people who would readily donate to secure their child's seat in an educational institute, may it be a nursery or a prestigious B-school. There would be another class of people who would get into a brawl with their neighbours or friend-turned-foes, would pay the cop and the other party not to take the matter to court, and call it compromise.
Is there anyone who can say that s/he has never indulged into corrupt pratices at whatever scale it might be. I am afraid there would be none, and even if there are, even they would have used some 'sifarish' here and there, if not used bribes.
But why do people have to resort to such practices after all, if they are all against it. Anna's team brought out a very nice thing called the Citizen's Charter. (This would be inline with the ITIL process that we sell to the world. If this comes to force, then wait to see how many response and resolution SLA's would be missed by the public servants.) We Indians are preffered across the globe for the service we provide, but can't help our own country. It is true that the whole infrastructure is to be blamed for not nuturing the talent that we Indians are renowned for. But, yet again, it is we who need to fix it. Or else the title of this post will ever remain true. The choice is ours and we will have to exercise it in the upcoming elections at all levels.
Jai Hind.
